Jennifer led the establishment of this college – the first new college at Berkeley in more than 50 years. She is also Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences, Information, Mathematics, and Statistics. Before joining Berkeley in 2020, Jennifer was Technical Fellow at Microsoft, where she led research programs for more than 20 years and was founder and managing director of three interdisciplinary labs: Microsoft Research New England, New York City, and Montreal. These labs were focused on core computing and AI and the interface of computing with many other fields, including mathematics, physics, biomedicine, economics, and social sciences. Before joining Microsoft, she was Professor of Mathematics at UCLA.

- [Dr. Juan Meza](https://tapiaconference.cmd-it.org/about/richard-tapia-award/dr-juan-meza/): Professor Juan Meza, with the Department of Applied Mathematics, has recently returned to his full-time academic position at UC Merced after serving as director for the Division of Mathematical Sciences with the National Science Foundation since 2018. He also served as dean of the School of Natural Sciences at UC Merced from 2011 to 2017. Meza earned his Ph.D. in Computational & Applied Mathematics in 1986; his M.S. in Electrical Engineering/Computer Science in 1979; and his B.S. in Electrical Engineering/Computer Science in 1978, all at Rice University. Meza studies nonlinear optimization with an emphasis on methods for parallel computing. He looks at the foundational math underlying real-world science problems to understand and predict how things behave. His work focuses on applied mathematics and computational research, with an emphasis on methods for parallel computing. He has also worked on a variety of scientific and engineering applications, such as scalable methods for nanoscience, power grid reliability, molecular conformation problems, optimal design of chemical vapor deposition furnaces and semiconductor device modeling.

- [Dr. Ayanna Howard Plenary](https://tapiaconference.cmd-it.org/about/richard-tapia-award/dr-ayanna-howard/): Dr. Ayanna Howard is the Dean of Engineering at The Ohio State University and Monte Ahuja Endowed Dean’s Chair. Previously she was the Linda J. and Mark C. Smith Endowed Chair in Bioengineering and Chair of the School of Interactive Computing at the Georgia Institute of Technology. In addition, she serves on the Board of Directors for Autodesk and Motorola Solutions.
- [Dr. Bryant York](https://tapiaconference.cmd-it.org/about/richard-tapia-award/dr-bryant-york/): Bryant York earned the A.B. in Mathematics from Brandeis University (1967), the M.S. in Management from MIT (1971), the M.S. (1976) and Ph.D. (1981) in Computer Science from the University of Massachusetts – Amherst. He was a Research Staff Member at the IBM San Jose Research Labs (1979-1983), a Consulting Engineer at Digital Equipment Corporation’s Artificial Intelligence Center (1983-1986), associate professor of computer science at Boston University (1986 – 1991) and Northeastern University (1991 – 2001), and professor of computer science at Portland State University (2001 – 2019).

He also worked as rector of Yachay Tech University in Ecuador during 2016 to 2018. For 2019, Castillo-Chavez is Provost Visiting Professor in the Applied Mathematics Division and Data Science Initiative at Brown University.
- [Dr. Valerie Taylor](https://tapiaconference.cmd-it.org/about/richard-tapia-award/dr-valerie-taylor/): Valerie Taylor is the Director of the Mathematics and Computer Science Division and a Distinguished Fellow at Argonne National Laboratory. Her research is in the area of high-performance computing, with a focus on performance analysis, modeling and tuning of parallel, scientific applications. Prior to joining Argonne, she was the Senior Associate Dean of Academic Affairs in the College of Engineering and a Regents Professor and the Royce E. Wisenbaker Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at Texas A&M University.

- [Dr. Ann Gates](https://tapiaconference.cmd-it.org/about/richard-tapia-award/dr-ann-gates/): Dr. Ann Quiroz Gates is the Vice Provost at the University of Texas at El Paso. She holds the AT&T Distinguished Professorship, and she served as Chair of the Computer Science Department (2005-2008 and 2012-2020) and Associate VP of Research and Sponsored Projects (2008-2012). She is the Executive Director of the Computing Alliance for Hispanic-Serving Institutions (CAHSI), one of NSF’s eight National INCLUDES Alliances that promote the importance of inclusion and equity in advancing innovation and discovery. Formed in 2006 to address the low representation of Hispanics in computing, CAHSI partners with over 60 universities, industry, non-governmental agencies, and other entities from the public and private sector to accelerate change. Because of its evidence-based practices, CAHSI has been nationally recognized by the White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for Hispanics as a “Bright Spot in Hispanic Education” in 2015 and has been added to the “What Works” database by Excelencia in Education, a nonprofit organization dedicated to Hispanic student success in higher education.
- [Dr. William Wulf](https://tapiaconference.cmd-it.org/about/richard-tapia-award/dr-william-wulf/): Bill Wulf received the first Computer Science Ph.D. ever awarded at the University of Virginia in 1968. He then joined Carnegie-Mellon University as Assistant Professor of Computer Science, becoming Associate Professor in 1973 and Professor in 1975. In 1981 he left Carnegie-Mellon and founded Tartan Laboratories and served as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer until 1988. In 1988-1990 he was Assistant Director of the National Science Foundation. In 1990 he returned to the University of Virginia as AT&T Professor and University Professor. Bill Wulf is a Fellow of the National Academy of Engineering, a Fellow of ACM, a Fellow of the IEEE, and a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. In 1997 he was elected President of the National Academy of Engineering, which operates under a congressional charter and presidential executive orders that call on it to provide advice to the government on issues of science and engineering. He has directed over 25 Ph.D. theses and is the author or co-author of three books, two patents and over 100 papers.
- [Dr. Juan Gilbert](https://tapiaconference.cmd-it.org/about/richard-tapia-award/dr-juan-gilbert/): Dr. Juan E. Gilbert is the Andrew Banks Family Preeminence Endowed Professor and Chair of the Computer & Information Science & Engineering Department at the University of Florida where he leads the Human Experience Research Lab. Dr. Gilbert has research projects in advanced learning technologies, usability and accessibility, Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCI), Human-Centered AI/machine learning and Ethnocomputing (Culturally Relevant Computing). He has published more than 250 articles, given more than 250 talks and obtained more than $28 million dollars in research funding. He is an ACM Fellow, a Fellow of the American Association of the Advancement of Science and a Fellow of the National Academy of Inventors. In 2012, Dr. Gilbert received the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics, and Engineering Mentoring from President Barack Obama.
- [Dr. Jan Cuny](https://tapiaconference.cmd-it.org/about/richard-tapia-award/dr-jan-cuny/): Jan Cuny is the founder of National Science Foundation Broadening Participation in Computing (BPC) program. Cuny received a Ph.D in Computer Science from the University of Michigan. She was a faculty member in the Department of Computer Science at Purdue University from 1981-1983; then a faculty member at the University of Massachusetts, and then at the University of Oregon. In 2004, she became a program officer at the National Science Foundation heading the Broadening Participation in Computing Initiative, the CS 10K project and in 2016 leading the STEM + Computing Partnerships initiative.
- [Dr. Richard Ladner](https://tapiaconference.cmd-it.org/about/richard-tapia-award/dr-richard-ladner/): After a long career in theoretical computer science research Richard Ladner moved to the area of accessible computing research which is an important subarea of human-computer interaction (HCI). Over his career he has supervised or co-supervised 30 Ph.D. students. His research continues, but he is also leads projects to bring more people with disabilities into computing fields. He is the PI for the NSF-funded AccessComputing Alliance that helps computing students at all levels complete their degrees in computing fields. He is also a PI for the NSF-funded AccessCSforAll that helps prepare K-12 teachers to be include students with disabilities in their computing courses.
- [Dr. David Patterson](https://tapiaconference.cmd-it.org/about/richard-tapia-award/dr-david-patterson/): David Patterson is a professor of the graduate school at UC Berkeley, a distinguished engineer at Google, Vice-Chair of the Board of Directors of the RISC-V Foundation, and Director of the RIOS Lab. He received his BA, MS, and PhD degrees from UCLA.
- [Dr. Manuel A. Pérez Quiñones](https://tapiaconference.cmd-it.org/about/richard-tapia-award/dr-manuel-a-perez-quinones/): Dr. Manuel A. Pérez Quiñones is Professor of Software and Information Systems at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte (UNCC). His research interests include human-computer interaction, CS education, and diversity issues in computing. He holds a DSc from The George Washington University and a BA & MS from Ball State University. He has over 100 refereed publications. He has served on several boards for nonprofits, advisory board for national organizations, chair/president of Hispanic Caucus at two institutions, conference leadership for Tapia and SIGCSE conferences, and held several administrative positions in academia. He has received several recognitions for his service in diversity in computing, among them: ACM Distinguished Member (2019); CRA Nico A. Haberman award (2018); Richard A. Tapia Achievement Award (2017). He is originally from San Juan, Puerto Rico.
- [Dr. Cristina Villalobos](https://tapiaconference.cmd-it.org/about/richard-tapia-award/dr-cristina-villalobos/): Dr. Cristina Villalobos is a Professor in the School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences, and Founding Director of the Center of Excellence in STEM Education, which focuses on strengthening STEM academic programs and providing resources for the academic and professional development of students and faculty. Her research area is in optimization, optimal control, and modelling. Currently she is working on projects associated with optimizing certain features in the creation of antennas and on creating optimal therapies for the treatment of the eye disease retinitis pigmentosa. - [Dr. Jeanine Cook](https://tapiaconference.cmd-it.org/about/richard-tapia-award/dr-jeanine-cook/): The 2020 Richard A Tapia Achievement Award winner is Dr. Jeanine Cook, a Principal Member of Technical Staff at Sandia National Laboratories in Albuquerque, New Mexico, in the scalable Architectures department at the Computer Science Research Institute. She is a leading researcher in the fields of High-Performance Computing, performance characterization and modeling, hardware accelerator technologies, edge-computing, large-scale system monitoring and data analytics. In addition, she has focused on diversity issues in computer science. She also mentored numerous PhD and Masters Students while a professor.
- [Dr. Jamika Burge](https://tapiaconference.cmd-it.org/about/richard-tapia-award/dr-jamika-burge/): Dr. Jamika D. Burge leads the Experiences Products and Platforms Design team at Capital One. Her team designs learning and research insights for multiple customer and platform experiences, at scale, including Eno, the conversational AI. She is the co-founder of Capital One’s Intersectional Symposium, which focuses on intersectionality as fundamental to exploring the dimensions of how our lived experiences matter in the products and experiences we create for each other and customers, and she contributes to the Fair and Responsible AI Principles initiatives.

Throughout his career, Dr. Isbell has continued to focus on issues of broadening participation in computing, and is the founding Executive Director for the Constellations Center for Equity in Computing. Dr. Isbell takes a data-driven approach to bring about his vision of broadening participation in computing. This approach provided motivation for launching the LEAP Alliance.

He obtained his PhD from the University of North Texas and MS from Glasgow Caledonian University, UK. Dr. Akwafuo's research interests include health informatics, computational epidemiology, contagion modelling, optimization algorithms, disaster response modelling, and simulation of disease outbreak logistics. His current focus is on using machine learning models to predict potential outbreaks of diseases in specific localities, and modeling intervention strategies for Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTD) in Sub-Saharan Africa, and other Low- and Middle-Income Countries (LMICs).
