Maria Patterson is currently a White House Presidential Innovation Fellow detailed to the Department of Labor as an industry specialist in AI, where she works on protocols for mitigating bias against people with disabilities in AI-enabled tech used in the workplace. Prior to civic tech, Maria earned a PhD in astronomy and started her career in academia, building petabyte-scale machine learning pipelines and shared cloud environments for scientists in a range of data-intensive fields, including medical, geospatial, and real-time astronomy. She then moved to industry where she designed and built data products for several tech startups in a venture studio environment, engineering machine learning pipelines and data science algorithms. She also worked with large companies to systematically conceive and launch startups as a new model for corporate innovation. Maria is heavily involved in diversity and inclusion efforts and is co-chair for the American Astronomical Society's Committee on the Status of Women in Astronomy.
