DescriptionIn the United States, employers may hire foreign workers to work permanently need to submit an immigration petition to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). A skilled worker visa is an essential channel for recruiting high-skilled employees for jobs that are challenging [2]. However, in the last couple of years, there has been controversy around immigration laws and pressure to current stricken policies by some policymakers. Therefore, it is crucial to assess the factors that have been previously used to determine visa decisions. This will help to determine whether previous decisions of permanent visas were unbiased and fair and to assess in future work whether current decisions are following similar patterns. This research is vital as 1) it affects people from all walks of life who may have been negatively affected by current immigration policies, and 2) companies that are seeking to diversify their workplaces but have been experiencing barriers because of current immigration policies. The results show that machine learning methods such as random forest may not be a viable option for predicting visa decisions. One of the counter-intuitive effects of this study is that the qualification of each applicant, like the level of educational degree, does not play an essential role in making visa decisions according to the importance plot.
